millennial (n) - anyone born between 1981 and 1996. Millennials matured with the internet, but still remember a childhood without it. Once purchasers of Tamagotchi’s and protectors of NeoPets, we are now the parents of fur-babies and purveyors of ideals like second bedrooms and consistent health insurance.
bohemia (n) - socially unconventional people and the area they inhabit. Any person or any place that does not adhere to societal norms which took root during the post-World War II economic boom. Examples of these “norms” include, but are not limited to: suburban idealism, child-rearing before age 35, the relentless pursuit of capitalistic superiority, gendered clothing and unpaid internships.
millennia bohemia encapsulates the porous era, the incandescent suspicion young people have upon leaving their home, school, or identities behind that nothing will ever be boring in their life again.
Welcome to MILLENNIAL BOHEMIA. A collection of essays to discuss the current moment and musings to reflect on past ones. Think of this Substack as that diary Ginny finds in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We’re going to be jumping around quite a bit, but hopefully there’ll be a lot more humorous insight and a lot less Petrification by spooky Basilisk™.
